The music scene these days is overcrowded with many musicians that do not have very much singing talent at all. The days of pure singers are over, and they are now replaced with many different kinds of sounds that are enhanced and created with sophisticated recording equipment.

Even when you go to see a musical act in concert, chances are the singer s voice and/or music in general is prerecorded. Then the singer just lip syncs the words and many people never know the difference. What ever happened to singers like Elton John, Sting, and Celine Dion? Now we have to listen to Kevin Federline, Kelly Osborne, and man-made bands like 98 degrees. However there are

a few musicians that are still putting out very good music, and are still quite popular. Josh Groban is a wonderful singer and he has a different sound.

When starting to learn chords, most people will start with the basic major and minor chords, then on to 7th and minor 7th chords. You might be surprised to learn that when you have mastered all twelve minor 7th chords you have also potentially learned twenty-four 11th chords.

I love the sound of 11th chords; they somehow manage to give a big sound and are great for key changes. If you want to listen to good examples of 11th chords then listen to some early Barry Manilow music such as Even Now , Mandy and Cant smile without you . Did you know that the piano keyboard is not used to its fullest potential? And that thousands of beginning piano students start out by playing a three-note triad that is as outdated as the dinosaur?

It’s true. The piano keyboard is huge! Over 80 keys big. Why not come up with a chord structure that uses more keys? Why not indeed!

There is a chord structure called the Open Position chord that uses more than 2 octaves of the keyboard. Both hands are called into play here to create a modern sounding seventh chord that is used frequently in pop, jazz, and new age music.

Growing up, I always loved music, admired musicians, and still do. When I entered college, a friend in my freshman dorm played the harmonica. I was fascinated and envious. I had always wanted to play an instrument but we could never afford lessons, let alone the ability to buy an instrument. But, when this guy told me he bought it for two dollars, my heart leapt. Even I could afford that paltry sum. So I immediately ran down to the local department store and bought my own. It wasn t until I got back to my room I realized I couldn t play a note. It drove my

roommate crazy and so I had to resort to playing in the bathroom or stairwell. I shouldn t use the term playing at this juncture. It was making noise on a very irritating level at best. But every spare minute between classes and studying, I tackled Mary Had a Little Lamb, and other classics.

Music is an art, however, when it comes to the music industry Music is about money!

If anyone or any company feels that your music will not make them money, there will be absolutely no interest in your music. That s it in the nut shell. Remember, to always remember this. The Music Industry is about Money!
